A failing motor is easy to confuse with a blockage or a tired battery. These checks help you tell the difference before you replace anything.
Signs the motor may have failed
- A loud grinding, rattling or screeching noise that was not there before.
- A hot or burning smell during use that is not just warm dust.
- The motor spins up, then stops, even with a clear airway and a clean filter.
- Weak suction that does not improve after you clear blockages, empty the bin and wash the filter.
Rule out the easy causes first
Take the battery off and check the wand, the cleaner head and the inside of the bin for blockages. Wash the filter in cold water and let it dry for at least 24 hours. If the machine still cuts out, try a different battery if you have one. Our guide to Dyson V10 and V11 cutting out covers these steps in more detail.

Before you buy
Every listing states whether the part is brand new or refurbished, and our returns policy applies if it is not right. Replacing a motor involves taking the machine apart, so only do it if you are comfortable with that and always remove the battery first.
