Dyson V10 or V11 cutting out or losing power: what to check first

22 October 2026

If your Dyson V10 or V11 pulses, cuts out or loses suction, the cause is often simple. Work through these checks in order before you buy anything.

1. Remove the battery and check for blockages

Switch off and take the battery off. Look for blockages in the wand, the hose inside the bin and the cleaner head. A sock or a clump of hair in the airway is the most common reason a cordless Dyson cuts out, because the machine shuts down to protect itself.

2. Empty and check the bin

A full or jammed bin cuts airflow. Empty it, and check that the bin base closes fully and that the seal is not split. If the bin is cracked or the lid no longer closes, a replacement is cheaper than living with the loss of suction. We list genuine bins for the Dyson V10 (969509-01) and the Dyson V11 (970050-01).

3. Wash the filter

Dyson says the filter is washable. Rinse it under cold water only, squeeze it out, and leave it to dry completely for at least 24 hours before refitting. Never put it back damp.

4. Check the trigger

If the machine only works when you hold the trigger in a certain way, or the trigger feels loose or sticks, the switch may be worn. See our V10 handle and trigger shell and trigger switch assembly.

5. Think about the motor and battery

If the airway is clear, the filter is clean and the machine still cuts out or runs rough, the motor may be failing. A worn battery can also cause cut-outs and short run times, and a replacement battery would need to come from Dyson or another trusted supplier. If you suspect the motor, read how to tell if your Dyson motor has failed.

Find the right part

Parts are model specific. Check the model number on your machine, then browse our Dyson V10 parts and Dyson V11 parts, or use our model number guide if you are not sure.

If you are not confident taking the machine apart, ask a qualified repairer. Always remove the battery before working on any cordless vacuum.
